What is particularly cruel about the attacks on immigrants and transgender people is that they already don’t have a voice. I don’t know any undocumented person living in the U.S. that wants to go on local news and speak out just like I don’t know any parent of a transgender child that wants to have their face all over the internet.
And yet we must resist.
These two marginalized groups of people are already silenced out of fear of being ‘outed’. Instead, they are just quietly trying to live their lives under the radar. They want to be fulfilled and happy and contributing members of their community… and they will be damned to have their faces all over the news.
And yet we must resist.
No family from Mexico wants to be the face that fights against deportation just like no family of a transgender child wants to be the face that fights for gender-affirming surgeries.
And yet we must resist.
We don’t want soldiers knocking on our doors asking to see our papers because of where we were born just like we don’t want soldiers knocking on our door because of how we were born.
And yet we must resist.
Nobody wants that call out because we don’t want to be the next ones targeted.
And yet we must resist.
And yet… the consequence of non-resistance is also high. The consequence of not resisting paves the way for more orders and demands that will make it impossible for our kids to even exist, let alone resist.
The risk is so high – And yet we must resist.
